CSE Speaker Series – Katheryn Perea

On Friday, November 9, 2018 at 3:00 pm in Jones Annex 101, Katheryn Perea will give a talk on “The Path Less Traveled: Bioinformatics”.

With the arrival of next generation sequencing came the explosion of one of the largest interdisciplinary fields to date – Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics is arguably one of the most influential fields in healthcare to date, and also plays a large role in Ecology as well as Forensic Science. Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry all play integral roles within the field, and there is a constant demand for people from these fields. There are a large amount of career opportunities in Bioinformatics in private industry, academia, and government. In a field this large there is a stress for individuals with interdisciplinary backgrounds and flexible interests. However, because this field is relatively new and highly volatile, many are unaware of what exactly it encompasses and where they may fit in it. In this talk I will broadly cover some of the subfields within Bioinformatics, pathways into a career in it, and some of the most recent developments within the field.
