When I first arrived at Wheeler to stay with my sister
and brother-in-law, I checked in and got my paperwork.
I mentioned that I was a birder and they recommended
that I visit an old airstrip that hadn't been used since
1941. I didn't mention that I was also a photographer,
or they would have mentioned that photography of the
flight line is not allowed.
However, while returning from the old airstrip, driving
near the flight line, I saw my lifer Eurasian Skylark and
immediately pulled over and started shooting pictures.
The bird flew around me in a broad circle, so I was
pointing the camera in every direction.
The rig I was using that day was a Novoflex 600mm, which
over three feet long and has a passing resemblance to a
bazooka. A serviceman walked out of a nearby building
labeled “Special Forces,” looked my way,
did a triple-take, and ran back into the building.
Shortly I noticed that there was a skirmish line of three
Air Police jeeps moving very slowly and cautiously in my
direction.
The AP did not literally put me in a cell, but they let
me cool my heels in the room adjacent to the cells while
they called my brother-in-law over from the west side of
the island to vouch for my innocence.
