This was my first visit to the location that I erroneously called “Bell Lake” for at least the next 20 years. The real Bell Lake is a bit further to the west. USGS's Geographic Names Information Service shows an “Allred Well” at 32°19'04"N, 103°31'48"W, which is probably the well that feeds into this pond. Directions: from Eunice, go south on the road to Jal. Just past the cemetery, a paved road, Lea County 12, intersects; turn west. After this road makes one 90° S-curve and two broad, 45° S-curves, it turns south, eventually to connect with the highway from Jal to Loving. Just past where the southbound leg begins there is a cattle guard. The dirt road to Allred Tank heads west from a point just north of this cattle guard. Habitat is typical south Lea County mesquite scrub and grasslands, but the tank itself has been around long enough to host some fairly large cottonwoods and willows, and there is a pond of maybe an acre or three, depending on recent runoff.
