Route
0715-1000, Percha Wildlife Habitat Area, immediately
north of PD. Due to a recent ankle injury I didn't feel
safe wandering alone inside the area, so I worked the
very south end and then the entire western fence. The
fence along the south side does not extend quite to the
river, so there's access to the extreme southeast corner
(when there isn't a clown with two nasty dogs camped
there like last April), but not far north there is a new
watercourse that prevents access to anything further
north. 1000-1130, Percha Dam SP. 1330-1500, Bosque del
Apache NWR. Very slow. The former night heron roost at
the east end of the central road is now dry and devoid of
herons. The staff tell me that the night herons can be
seen along the seasonal road, but that road is closed
now. The only shorebird habitat I could find was the
Marsh Boardwalk at the southwest corner of the loop,
which has some mudflats due to lower water levels, but
very few birds.
