Weather Weather started sunny and warm, soon clouding over with sporadic rain, and a fair amount of hail up to about 5mm diameter. Winds low to moderate.
Missed Most of the expected shorebirds; the only shorebirds were Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, and both recurvirostrids.
Film A few more frames on the roll of KR-64, taken out in mid-roll, to restart at frame 14. Start new EL-400.

Furthermore it had the two nuptial ``horns'' on its head, blowing in the sharp breeze.

70 birds at the edge of some kind of feeding frenzy at the very north end of the Farm Loop, and 20 more soaring in a kettle just to the south. The field was flooded and looked to have a short (6") growth of some crop, possibly alfalfa.
The hawks plus over a hundred gulls were going to town on something in there. Most of the hawks were just standing along the berm on the northwest side. I've seen such a concentration of Swainson's Hawk before, in a new-mown hayfield near Artesia one fall. At that time my colleague Philip Johnson and I speculated that they were attracted by the rodents driven out by the mowing. Perhaps today the attraction was rodents driven out by flooding.

Description: Took a number of photos of one very fresh spring bird on the loop. These frames should be useful in my series on Western vs. Cassin's, as it has many of the superficial marks of the latter: darker gray on the head, a really bright yellow belly, and the strongly whitish chin patch. However, the head didn't seem quite dark enough, especially away from the crown. A longer look finally revealed the white outer rectrices, and when I finally got a look at the chest, it was indeed not sufficiently sharply contrasted with the chin color, so I still think a sharply demarcated middle gray or darker gray chest just below the chin is a good mark for Cassin's. Once the birds wear into this plumage a bit, it's a much easier call, as the gray of the head and the yellow of the belly fade. But with the really fresh spring birds, if you don't get a look at the front, it can be tough.
