Near the 16th hole, I found what was an early, small Easter egg. But it was a real egg in robin's-egg blue, probably a robin's egg.

Vocalizations: 'pi-KEEN', as in 'chile piquin'.
A teacher who teaches frequently in this building says these birds have tried to nest here frequently over the last several years. They tend to pick a site around the south patio, but then give up when the Metal Arts students are out there on weekends pounding on things for a few hours.

Route About an hour before sunset, I got an e-mail that made me drop everything and drive immediately to the San Acacia exit off I-25 and scan the fields there. Bingo, with the last bit of direct light! No pictures would have been possible.

From Socorro, take I-25 north to exit 163, San Acacia. Head east toward San Acacia, then immediately turn left on the paved frontage road going north. Proceed to the last alfalfa field on the east side. The bird was perched in a big leafless tree on the north side of that field.

Route 1100, leave Socorro, head for the refuge. Center road to seasonal road. Walked the west-east leg of the seasonal road twice; the larger trees of this stretch were fairly active with migrants today. Completed the Farm Loop; worked Marsh Loop; left around 1600.
Film F3 body had a roll of VC-400 loaded 2006-02-04 13:50, but there were no shots on it. Removed at 1110, new roll of Kodak UC, EI 100 print film. Finished at 1515; loaded new roll of VC-400, shots through [,14].

Description: Several photos of this bird perched on a snag immediately adjacent to a Neotropic. The larger head and overall size were quite apparent. The rear margin of the gular pouch curved gently down to the throat, markedly different than the pointed rear margin of the Neotropics.

Seen from the first leg of the seasonal road. Not terribly close to the road, either.
Description: I was expecting something more like the size of a Marbled Godwit, but this bird's overall size was pretty much the same as the nearby dowitchers. Distinguished from dowitcher by: longer bill, noticeably decurved, the basal 5/8 of its length a pinkish horn color, the distal part black; breast a deep rufous color; face and head whitish except for a dark superciliary line.

Seasonal road, eastbound leg, midpoint.
Description: I did not see this bird extremely well, but I did see a bird that was generally gray except for a yellow patch around the vent, with a prominent complete white eyering. Jerry Oldenettel said he'd seen a couple of Nashvilles here earlier, and I couldn't completely rule that out, as I didn't see the upperparts too well. The photo is probably of this bird.
