Saw a fox (not sure which species) crossing Calle de Lago at about 10:15pm. Numerous people have seen one or two foxes in town recently; there was a picture of one on the front page of the local paper.

Two Striped Skunks observed from uncomfortably close range. As I emerged from the north door of Speare Hall after dark, I saw what I thought were two cats walking toward the loading ramp (where I was about to walk down to my car). They were not cats. They disappeared into a drainpipe and did not trouble me further, thankfully.

15:20, leave San Antonio southbound. Drove down to the site of the recent railroad derailment to inspect the cleanup process. BNSF was a lot more prepared than BP, and I'm reasonably satisfied that they have done little or no damage to the refuge.
15:55, on the loop.
16:55, start the seasonal road.
17:30, leave the main tour loop.
17:45, county A-101 north.
18:15, look at Chaparral and Hope Farms Roads in Socorro.

Behavior: A snake about five feet long was in the road, and the vulture was picking at it. As I approached, the bird picked the snake up in its bill and carried it a few yards. At that point he dropped it into some tall Kochia plants, whether intentionally or accidentally. As I passed by I saw him circling back to get it.

At least 90% of the swallows I saw today were of this species. Most of today's swallow photos show many individuals, but I've tried to post at least one photo of each species under its entry. Didn't find any images of the one Violent-green that I saw, though.

Breeding: Finally observed a downy young on the nest, and stole one quick photo. I thought I might have seen a second chick, but this is the only time this breeding cycle that I was sure of even one. No doubt some people would have gotten a mirror or stood on a ladder to count eggs or young at some point (the nest is six feet off the ground in the crown of a cholla), but I am trying to avoid completely any moves that might disturb the breeding. After all, the nest is about six feet from the car door. So I avert my eyes when close and try not to get in the birds' faces.
