From the intersection of NM-1 and Fifth St. in San Antonio, go 75 yards south and inspect the large but scraggly juniper in the front yard of the house on the west side.

Description: Black mask; white patch just below auriculars; bright yellow throat.

As seen by many over many days. A most obliging bird, though constantly active. Photos are poor because my good rig was in the shop; shot with an 18-200mm zoom.

I received a reliable report of three Collared Peccary, Tayassu tajacu, in the Magdalena Mountains on this date. Location was at the head of Trail 13, which is on the Langmuir Road a half-mile or so above the end of the pavement. Reported by Dan Klinglesmith, who drives this road often and is familiar with the species.

There are two lines of high-tension towers in the median of Paseo del Norte between San Pedro and Louisiana. Starting from Louisiana, count two tower sets west; perched on the crossarm of the southerly tower.

Although it was the first day of winter, some of the Pogonomyrmex ants in my yard were in evidence just outside their entrance. Temperature was 65F in the afternoon.

Box Canyon is a well-known rock-climbing venue right off US-60 a few miles west of Socorro.

This is pretty far out of the Rio Grande Valley bottoms. No idea how it got all the way out here. Although Eric is not a birder, he described it well enough, not that pheasants are that tough an ID challenge.

12:20, enter the refuge, on to the Marsh Loop.

13:00, walk out the Boardwalk and then a quarter-mile or so south on the Marsh Trail and back.

13:50, rolling, completed the Marsh Loop and then drove the Farm Loop.

15:50, back to San Antonio for about 20 minutes.
