Field test of new-to-me Nikkor 80-400mm and second D300 body. Several sequences included shots of the same bird from the same vantage point with this lens and my current 600mm rig.
Note: Clock on D300b was about 1032 when it was 0948 on my watch, probably MDT.

For big, slow-moving birds like these and cranes, the 80-400mm autofocus does a nice job. There were a number of dust spots on the sensor when I got it; a good professional cleaning (APT Camera, Albuquerque) took care of them.

Last year around this season, the three new observation blinds here fronted on a large body of water. This winter, it is almost completely gone. A smallish puddle remained in the very north end of the former extent. I couldn't see all of it, as it was behind a low ridge, but it was at least thirty meters long and probably a few meters wide.

This unfortunate hawk has a deformed left foot. It patiently waited while I took long series of shots with three different lenses for comparison purposes. The first two used a Questar 700mm f/8 catadioptric. The third is the best of a series from my standard 300mm x2. The fourth and fifth used my backup 80-400mm rig. All were taken out the car window from the same position.
