Shipman's favorite Albuquerque Chinese restaurants
- 328 Chinese, Albuquerque, NM***
- Ho-Lo-Ma***, on Menaul just east of Wyoming. Nothing
unusual, just very well-executed versions of the standards.
Their General Tso's Chicken (``Tao'' on the menu) is excellent.
On 2001-8-6 the special was Scallop and Tofu, and both the
scallops and the tofu were very tender and tasty.
- Chow's Chinese Bistro***, 1950 Juan Tabo. Beautiful food,
beautiful room.
- Szechwan***, on Eubank between Indian School and Menaul.
- Yen Ching***, southeast corner of Wyoming and Montgomery.
In particular, they never overcook squid, and
that kind of skill---the difference between tender squid and
vulcanized squid is about ten seconds---is all too rare.
Also good for Korean food.
- For dim sum,
Beijing Palace*** is excellent
(dim sum cart service Saturday and Sunday 11am-2pm only).
- ABC Chinese, on Menaul just east of Ho-Lo-Ma (above).
Still checking them out, but it looks very promising. A
favorite with many of my friends who are natives of China.
ABC, like many Chinese restaurants, has a "blue menu"
(featuring country-style and home-style dishes, not
the fancy banquet food most Mandarin places serve)---but
unlike many of the blue menus, it has English translations.
All-you-can-eat buffets
- China King***: exit I-40 East at Juan Tabo and go north.
Turn left at the first light, then immediately turn left again
behind the Olive Garden. Consistently high quality, even during
mid-afternoon. Don't miss the Peanut Chicken.
- Main Chinese**, on the north side of Zuni just east of San
Mateo, is a pretty adequate buffet-only place. It's quite
popular with folks from the nearby hospitals and military bases,
so the food doesn't sit on the buffet as long.
Gone but not forgotten
- Ma's (Chinese) Garden Restaurant****, 412 San Pedro SE
(east side of San Pedro just north of Zuni). Their best thing
is the tofu spears wrapped in seaweed, which isn't on the menu,
but seems always to be on the buffet. The buffet doesn't have
quite the variety of Main Chinese, but the quality is better.
