Living in California gave me a lifelong passion for fresh fish. Until recently, though, it was a hard passion to indulge.
Now, though, there is a first-rate fish market in Albuquerque. Nantucket Shoals is not a huge place, and they usually have only a dozen or so fresh specials, but what they have is fresh and of the highest quality.
Here are some of the things I saw last time I visited (March 9, 1995):
On other visits I've seen such delights as perch, swordfish, and squid.
Directions: 5415-C Academy NE, Albuquerque, NM, (505) 821-5787. From the I-25/I-40 interchange, drive north on I-25 for a few miles and take the San Mateo Boulevard exit. Head south on San Mateo, moving into the left lane, and turn left on Academy. Go a couple of blocks and look for Trattoria Trombino on the left. Nantucket Shoals is right next door to Trombino's.
Tell them if you're from Socorro. Nancy, the owner, is actually a native of Socorro. She knows her fish, though, and wields a wicked filleting knife.
