Shipman's reading list: ``hard'' science fiction

I've been a serious SF fan since 1960, starting with the classic Heinlein juveniles and John W. Campbell's Analog. This list is my attempt to highlight just some of the best: the books I'd use to hook someone who doesn't know much about the genre.

Stanislaw Lem
C. J. Cherryh
Philip K. Dick
Frank Herbert
Walter Jon Williams
Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash is one of the most stylistically interesting finds of the 1990s. The ending is not snappy, but I thought it had one of the all-time great first paragraphs, and the scenery and concepts are pretty nice.
