Although the pictures are not definitive (especially for color), I suspect the Summer Tanager is Piranga rubra rubra which is darker and smaller than our breeding P. r. cooperi. The former winters in small numbers westward to California, and there is a November (Sierra Co.) and a January (Bernalillo Co.) specimen from New Mexico.
