Encode recapture records on a line starting with
“R”, followed by all nine
digits of the band number:
Rnnnnnnnnn…
where the rest of the record is described under Section 6.13, “The encounter body section”.
The initial “R” code may be
omitted for sheets containing only recapture records. In
the few cases where banders place recaps on new-band
sheets, be sure to use the initial “R” to distinguish that record from the new-band
records.
If any digit of the band number is illegible or left
blank, code it as a question mark (“?”). For example, if a bander saw that the last
three digits of a band number were -376, and then the
bird escaped before they could read the rest of the
number, code that as “??????376”.
