In the periodical Birding, published by the American Birding Association (ABA), Lee Jones has proposed an alternative four-letter coding system for use by birders. This system is not officially endorsed by the ABA. Here is the citation:

Birding, December 1992, pp. 377-380.If anyone is interested, I will work up a comparative analysis showing how many collisions exist in this system, similar to my analysis of collisions in the Bird Banding Lab (BBL) code system. The only difference between Jones's system and the BBL system is the handling of names with four or more words, so the impact on the collision count is minor.
