Abstract: Parallel applications, such as numerical methods and simulations, rely on state-of-the-art supercomputers to solve increasingly large and accurate problems quickly. Inter-process communication often dominates the cost of these applications, particularly at scale. The cost of communication is heavily dependent on the relative locations of source and destination processes. Redirecting messages to limit expensive communication greatly improves the performance of entire parallel applications. In this talk, I will discuss communication bottlenecks in common numerical methods, along with locality-aware optimizations for these bottlenecks.
