Agenda for CSE Department Meeting 1-31-24

PARs

• Your PAR is due (Feb 1). Several (at least Jiakai, Jun, Sana, Hamdy, Suraj) already turned theirs in!
• Remember to include your course evaluations. It might be wise to read them, including comments.
• Your administrators are not naive and will not overreact to isolated student eval comments, but may be interested in trends or recurring themes among student comments.
• We need to schedule meetings, discuss your PAR. See my Google Calendar and suggest a day/time between now and Feb. 21.

Assessments Status

• CSE : missing a couple data points, delivered to faculty last week.
• IT : delivered in draft form to IT faculty.
• GRADCS : not started yet
• MGMT : ???
• we also need to turn in the MGMT+IT self study soon!

Advising complaints and/or rebalance

• I get recurring reports of students not getting any response to requests for advising from about half the faculty.
• Advising is important. How shall we fix this?

Troubles with CSE 382

• Perpetually not enough seats for CSE sections.
• Its really now a lower-division PHIL course masquerading as upper division CSE.
• Shall we do anything about it, or is this all fine?

423 Prerequisite Nightmare

• I am inundated by requests for prerequisite waivers in 423.
• The most frequent is from folks who just flunked 344.
• Second-most frequent is from folks who got C- or lower in 342.
• The dean does not like prereq waivers, and with good reason.
• Comparison:

  NMT	C or better in 342, programming languages, software engineering, analysis of algorithms
  NMSU	C- or better in OOP, data structures, machine organization
  UNM	"admitted to school of engineering"
  UIdaho	programming languages, theory of computation
  UArizona	machine organization, discrete structures, systems programming

• Proposal: drop the 344 prereq. Change 342 to a C- or better. Still require programming languages and software engineering
