Agenda for CSE Department Meeting 10-11-21
Departmentwide Topics
- Tomatoes?
- There are tomatoes in the CS office if anyone wants them.
- Defense interest?
- If you are a US citizen and interested in defense-related research,
please drop me a note.
- Faculty Advising Load-Balance
- A number of students this past year reported difficulty receiving
advising from their assigned advisor. Naturally some folks are better at
advising than others.
According to some Argos report, CSE Advising counts range from 6-32.
MGT Advising ranges from 0-11. My intention is to load balance CS. MGT
enjoys substantial autonomy so they can decide their own policy, but let
me know what the policy should be.
- 2020-2021 Assessment Status
-
- MGT Q: are we doing two courses per program per year, or all courses
every year?
- A: we have to turn in a report on each program every year.
It has to map assessed data to program outcomes.
We have
a certain latitude as to how to maintain that in a fashion that is
professional and current.
- Review: VPAA Assessment page
- Assessment = Learning Outcomes + Methodology + Evaluation + Actions
- Assessment reports page
- If you are GenEd course, or an ABET program, maybe additional requirements
- For the rest, assessments contribute to overall program (and
dept., college, and universitywide) assessments
- Sampling vs. every-course-every-semester vs. aggregating --
as far as I am concerned, each program can adopt what it feels is
(the minimum) necessary to be statistically valid. But if you have
few students and low enrollment, you basically have to collect
every data point every semester and aggregate across semesters/years
to have numbers that mean anything.
- if low enrollment, many semesters you might just collect and present
the data without evaluating it, or provide a rolling assessment.
- Last year, when I didn't know what I was doing, I managed the CS BS
F19-S20 assessment in
Fall 2020 when expected, but submitted CS grad assessment and IT
assessments in Spring 21. MGT eventually submitted (I think) later
in 2021 (Summer?)

course would have enough students to make.

- And minor and grad certificate in data science.
- Need a non-113/122 track.
- Using ML/AI w/out knowing how to build stuff.
Dr. Arvin wanting to teach using ML/AI. Danger of hijacking CS
brand.
- Math also offering statistical ML, how does it relate? Is it
interchangeable?
- Python equivalent of 122?
- Python freshman data science intro?
- Python junior science data science course?
