Discussion of CS Grad Applicants
There are natural questions:
- to what extent should the department prefer PhD to MS?
-- no preference, unless there's a defined PhD research connection
- to what extent should the department prefer your RA hires,
over others with higher grades, higher test scores? -- the department
should generally prefer students who are offered a joint RA...but TAs
do need to have ability to help teach our curriculum; language skills,
and a CS background. TAs need to know CS. new TAs who are not from NMT
need to be taught how things work here. TAs should be expected to attend
the class they are TAing for.
- We need to assess TAs every semester, and be prepared to fire after
a second semester of unsatisfactory performance.
- to what extent should the department prefer current TA's over
bringing in new ones?
- to what extent should the department prefer NMT graduates as TAs? --
often they are better prepared to help with our courses
- Should we zoom interview TA candidates? yes. maybe focus on certain
core classes. Maybe start interviewing near end of january and into
february
- Evaluate each transcript for CS core coverage, include the metric in
TA selection rankings
- Check TA salaries at competing or peer schools; be more competitive.
