Graduate Certificate in Computer Science Education

The Computer Science Education Graduate Certificate offers post-baccalaureate professionals an opportunity to build and strengthen their capabilities in computer science for K-12 educational work. The 15 credit hours of graduate coursework required for the certificate include the foundational overview of computer science and cybersecurity as well as courses on how to teach introductory and lower-division computer science subjects. Computer Science is math-intensive and some of these courses require a math background.

Requirements for the Computer Science Education Graduate Certificate are:

  1. STCH 5010, Computer Science for Educators (3cr)
  2. STCH 5xxx, Cybersecurity Fundamentals (3cr)
  3. CSE 502, Introduction to Programming for Teachers (5 cr)
  4. CSE 503, Algorithms and Data Structures for Teachers (4 cr)

Dual-Credit Certification

To receive dual-credit certification, add:
  • CSE 504, Object Oriented Programming for Teachers (4 cr)

Descriptions of New Courses

CSE 502, Introduction to Programming for Teachers (5 cr)
Prerequisite: Math 1240 or instructor permission
Study of the curriculum for introducing computer programming. Students review content and complete homeworks for CSE 107 or 113; lectures focus on pedagogy and instructional techniques. May not be applied towards the BS, MS, or PhD degree in Computer Science or IT.

CSE 503, Algorithms and Data Structures for Teachers (4 cr)
Prerequisite: CSE 502
Study of the curriculum for introducing algorithms and data structures. Students review content and complete homeworks for CSE 117 or 122; lectures focus on pedagogy and instructional techniques. May not be applied towards the BS, MS, or PhD degree in Computer Science or IT.

CSE 504, Object Oriented Programming for Teachers (4 cr)
Prerequisite: CSE 503
Study of the curriculum for introducing object oriented programming. Students review content and complete homeworks for CSE 117 or 122; lectures focus on pedagogy and instructional techniques. May not be applied towards the BS, MS, or PhD degree in Computer Science or IT.

STCH 5xxx, Cybersecurity Fundamentals (3 cr)
Cybersecurity Fundamentals is a comprehensive course tailored for high-school level teachers, empowering them with the necessary knowledge and skills to instruct students on safeguarding internet-connected systems from vulnerabilities and cyber-attacks. The course delves into a range of topics, such as cybercrimes, cyber ethics, Linux basics, networking technologies, essential cybersecurity terminology, an introduction to hacking, cryptography principles and applications, social engineering attacks, penetration testing, and vulnerability assessment tools.
