Library

David Cox writes:

It is time to reconvene our Skeen Library Advisory Committee for this 23-24 Academic Year. This committee is a way for the Library to be in communication regarding programming, faculty needs, and the overall mission of the Library. We plan to meet in September, January, and May.

Do we have a department representative who wishes to continue on the library committee, or should we elect a new one?

What classes do they help with, how much help is in-person, how students request assistance, etc.

CS Sysadmin Topics

• There is budget for some equipment upgrades or new capabilities. Is there anything we should be buying this year?
• Current sysadmin team Garrett Wood, Tommy Pham, Maya Savino, Remy Mujynya
• Currently advertising on handshake to hire new team members.
• Lately the team has operated as a sort of minor league training ground for CC, which sucks up admins after they learn enough to become useful.
• @cs.nmt.edu Mail server was brought down by a sysadmin who plans to leave it down for the week until he can repair some things. This is not OK.
• geri, the GPU server named after Geri's Game, has some A100 GPU's that may be useful for some projects and/or classes. Are we able to use it.

CS Summer STEM brainstorming

• it isn't: anyone can do anything you want
• how does this coordinate with Buzzcamp? We will want our offerings to be complementary, so expect there to be discussion on that.
• Differences from Buzzcamp: academic credit, older audience, some apparent quality filter on incoming students. Buzzcamp has no filter, is mostly younger and content is not close to college-credit
• Cameron Mooney writes:

  Compensation for the course instructor for Summer STEM is $1500 per week session taught. The money comes from the community education account which we charge students around $550 to $600 for the week (cost TBD). This price pays housing, food, events, fees, and their classroom instructors. I have nothing to do with course creation, most faculty come to me with a course they would like to teach and then I start marketing it. It really needs to be 2 things - #1 Accessible to high schoolers and #2 High energy and exciting. That being said historically it is really difficult to fill courses that are uninteresting. If we can't register more than 5 students to a course we end up dropping it. That being said, it's really incumbent on the department to make a course that will interest 5 or more high school students.

• So $1500 for one (intense) week...except what about prep time? If you are doing one, it is for the love of the institution or something. It is run by admissions, so I view it as literally: recruiting service.
• For faculty doing research: you may not want to forego research to make an extra buck. Research is frequently sacrificed for teaching and for service in this department. In excess, this is bad. So it is Just Fine to propose nothing.
• having said that: what would be the most fun and exciting CS we can pack into a week and still credibly say it is work a college credit?
