Agenda for CSE Department Meeting 9-6-23
- Friday: our next CS Research Seminar
- special guest
Dr. Kenny Gruchalla of NREL will give a talk titled "From Data to Discovery at NREL: Advancing Insight through Visualization".
- next Wednesday: our next CS Research Seminar
- special guest
Dr. Giri Krishnan of UCSD will give a talk titled "Introducing sleep in deep neural network improves continual learning and generalization".
- Financial Conflict of Interest for Student Researchers
- University's definition of who has to be trained to report conflicts
of interest seems to be expanding to include students, just like
they are also going to require student researchers to do the
responsible conduct of research training.
- Are the CS grad cybercertificate, MS, or PhD distance programs?
-
- Since I got here I've understood us to be "mostly"
available by distance, and had several grad student inquiries.
- We've admitted various non-local grad students,
although ones who matriculate are usually at least in NM.
- Whether any particular course is offered via distance has been
up to the instructor.
- Aly seems to be advertising us as available distance grad programs?!
- Maybe there were tentative verbal agreements to try out distance
for required grad courses.
- We are now supposed to tell Aly by October 2
- If we are going to not be a distance grad program, there may be some
admitted (distance) students that we may need to help as we wind down.
- Jun has said that he doesn't want to do 525 by distance, and
Hamdy has expressed some reservations about distance as well.
- CS Summer STEM brainstorming
-
- Do we want to do anything besides Buzzcamp? If so,...
- What would be the most fun and exciting CS
we can pack into a week
and still credibly say it is work a college credit?
- Assessment
-
- It is September 6. Have you completed your assessments?
- Let's form the committees to review the various topic areas and make
recommendations. What-all needs changed here?
- Analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of
computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions
- Courses: 324, 325, 331, 353, 423
Committee Members: Hamdy, Jun, Clint, John
- Design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a
given set of computing requirements in the context of the program’s
discipline;
- Courses: 113, 122, 213, 221, 222, 324, 353, 423
Committee Members: Ely, Sana, John, Hamdy, Jun, Clint
- Communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts;
- Courses: 326, 331, 382
Committee Members: Dongwan, Jun, Chris
- Recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in
computing practice based on legal and ethical principles;
- Courses: 382
Committee Members: Chris
- Function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in
activities appropriate to the program’s discipline; and
- Courses: 325, 326
Committee Members: Jun, Clint, John, Dongwan
- Apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to
produce computing-based solutions.
- Courses: 241, 326, 342, 344, 423
Committee Members: Ramyaa, Dongwan, Subhasish, Clint
- Recommendations can include: changes in course content. Or: changes
in how courses are assessed.
- Committees should also recommend additions and removals to the course
learning outcomes and the amounts and quality of data used to assess them.
- What have I received already?
- In Fall 22 I have CSE 122, CSE 221, CSE 241, CSE 353, CSE 585...
- In Spring 23 I have CSE 222, CSE 324, CSE 326, CSE 331, CSE 342,
CSE 363, CSE 382, CSE 525...
- What do I still need?
- In Fall 22 I need CSE 113, CSE 325, CSE 344
- In Spring 23 I need CSE 113, CSE 122,
CSE 423, IT 373, IT 462?, IT482?
- Google drive was shared with you-all

This year, our IT, MGMT programs will be especially assessed by internal
NMT admin. If you teach IT or MGMT classes, expect I'll need more help
than usual
