Problem #5 (10 points)

Creating Infrastructure Network Models

Assigned: 2012-02-13
Due: 2012-02-20

Overview:

You are a leader of a small team of developers who are supposed to create a model of the critical infrastructure of a small community. You must decide what guidance to give your team members so they can collect the information needed to start building the infrastructure models.

Details:

You have been directed to model the following infrastructures for the community:

  1. Electric Power
  2. Communications
  3. Water
  4. Transportation

You are only in the planning stages, but must identify what the team members must do to gather the data for the models needed. Identify how you would proceed to lay out the groundwork for your team.

  1. Identify the physical characteristics that you feel the team will need to model the physical layers of each of the networks.

  2. Identify the various resource flows that are likely to be prevalent on each of the given networks.

Identify how your team members should proceed to define the following:
  1. How should they identify the variations in each of the infrastructure networks listed that are present in the community?

  2. Identify the physical network characteristics that are present in the networks under study.

  3. Identify the various resource flows that are actually present on each of the given networks.

  4. Identify how they should go about getting the details of the network flow behaviors for each node type and link in each of the infrastructure networks?

Turn-in:

A paper (in MS Word or pdf) describing each of the above points for each infrastructure layer in a form to to convince management (above you) that you are the person to run the project.

This paper is to be placed in a single file and e-mailed as an attachment to jholten@nmt.edu
