Route
Santa Fe northeast to Johnson Mesa with John Hubbard, Jim
Vaught, and Philip Johnson. Broke down on the dam of
Weatherley Lake on Corrumpa Creek, our second flat tire
of the day. A passing carload of local farmers stopped to see
if we needed help. They were on their way to a girls' basketball
game in Des Moines, which is an extremely serious activity there.
One of the farmers got out along with their spare and told the
rest of the crew to drive on to the game. But the spare had
five bolt holes and our wheel had six. So this amazingly
helpful gentleman jogged a mile or more back to his ranch
and returned with a pickup and the six-hole spare from his
trailer. We dropped him at the game and he asked us to
drop the tire off with the tire dealer who fixed our flats
so he could pick it up the next day.
