Route
0715-0915, @PWHA. The fence on the south side is in pretty good repair, unfortunately, and the river end was occupied by campers with a couple of aggressive dogs. So I went in on the east side where the watercourse crosses under the road, worked the cottonwood grove in the middle of the area, and escaped by climbing the gate near the northerly end of the west boundary. Judging by the lack of good foot trails, there's not much foot traffic through here. Note to thoroughly lacerated self: next time, wear long pants.
0915-1015, Percha Dam SP, including the first half mile or so of the trail south from the south end.
1200, briefly looked around Elephant Butte Dam.
Early afternoon, once around the loop at Bosque del Apache. No scope, and the wind kept the numbers down.
Missed There were rumors of a White Ibis, and a visitor recorded it in the log today at the visitor center, and I looked hard at every ibis, but no such luck.

Description: I looked up and saw a good-sized, chunky, all-black raptor perching, facing me. Cere was yellow, with a small pale gray area around it. Legs yellow. All the plumage I could see was either a dark charcoal gray or very dark with a slightly warm brownish cast; this should show in my photos. When flushed, I got a short but full-on look at the tail pattern from below: black basally, with a white subterminal band about an inch wide, then the last inch black. I didn't see the narrow white terminal band shown in the guides, but the bird was in and out of sunlight and the look was brief.
