Route Time 0600-0950. Strong wind out of the north all day, even before dawn. This is the second time I've worked this spot on a windy day, and my advice to others is to work the lee side of the larger thickets around the pond, where some interesting birds are cowering out of the wind. All in all, though, a pretty short species list: not one vireo, for example. Worked CCNP headquarters around midday.

Hanging around the pond outflow for about 20 minutes and still found there an hour later.

Description: Black crown patches flanking white median stripe, two wingbars, two anteroposteriorly oriented rows of small round dark spots flanking the vent.

Redstart, American 1♂ @Rattlesnake Springs

Uncharacteristically slow-moving and also loitering near the pond outflow on and off for an hour or more, and singing.

Description: Probably a young male of the year, based on the short, dark smudgy line extending partway across the chest, and the warm color spots just under the anterior end of the folded wing, which were more of an orange-yellow than a plain yellow.

What a beautiful bird. It's never a day wasted at Rattlesnake Springs if I get even a glimpse of this charmer. One of them sprang up onto a tree not far after dawn, saw me, and immediately bolted back into the thicket. The other actually stayed in sight for a couple of minutes.
