Route Leave Socorro about 1330, drive I-25 to San Antonio, NM-1 to Bosque del Apache, once around the loop (missing the center road), finishing up around 1700.
Missed Pied-billed Grebe; no swallows, despite the lack of wind.
Film Started a new roll of Kodachrome 64, camera being empty since the last date. Shot a few frames of a close Clark's Grebe, but EI was set around 300, so they'll be thick.
With Dr. Elinor Gates, visiting from out of town.

Description: Dark cap, eye well forward in the skull, fine red barring on underparts.
Behavior: First spotted perched by the pond right by the loop entrance, then twice more at locations around the loop. One antic gave us the high point of the day. The bird was perched on a horizontal branch and not seeming to pay much attention to us nearby on the road. Suddenly it did something I've rarely seen Accipiters do: it hopped and then ran along the branch, staring intently down into some brush below. Suddenly it dropped like a rock into the brush and out exploded two cock pheasants going opposite directions. The hawk chased one a quarter mile or so, but the pheasant dropped into some brush and the hawk gave it up.
Three sightings, likely the same individual.
