2005-07-11: NM: Magdalena Mts.

Route Arrived at Water Canyon about 1100. Sat around for a few hours. Brief hike above the campground.
Nonbird wildlife included: Mule Deer doe; California Sister butterfly.
Woodpecker, Acorn 4 @Magdalena Mts.
Not far above the picnic tables.
Behavior: Four seen at once. One that seemed to have a lighter-colored bill was begging from another. Another was seen entering and leaving a nest cavity within sight of the campground loop.

Description: Rather pale.
Raven, Chihuahuan @Magdalena Mts.
Description: Perched on the wire facing me and facing into the wind, it clearly displayed a nickel-sized white spot in its neck underfeathering. The light was from right angles; no way was this a highlight. Another pair went literally screaming around the campground.
Vocalizations: While circling the campground they screamed a long 'graaack'. Later I heard the characteristic 'rack-rack' calls, just like typical Hobbs birds.

Route Fourth leg of my project to hike the entire Langmuir Lab road from Water Canyon to the lab gate in both directions. 0900, leave Socorro. 1020, start hiking up from Double Zero (335925.5n 1070911.7w), around 9000'. 1230-1255, lunch at the saddle around 9500' (335929.1n1070942.8w). 1425, back to car, drive down.
Today's mystery song: probably a warbler, transcribed as 'goochee^4'. Grace's Warbler?
"Blue" followed by a number refers to the new blue signs marking each culvert; I have good GPS fixes for all those signs. "mm" followed by a number refers to the green mile markers; the zero point is the junction of Water Canyon Road and US 60.
At the cattle tank halfway up the flat part of Water Canyon Road, there were lots of "instant frogs" (probably Spadefoot Toads or something similar). It rained pretty well here last night.
Butterflies included several California Sisters and at least two Double-tailed Swallowtails, well up the road.

Jill observed this bird just below Blue 55, near mm9.75, on the right side of the road (as you ascend) in a conifer.
Description: She described as having a large dark facial rectangle framed by a face whose color was intermediate between the yellow of the immature and the deep orange of the adult depicted in her field guide.
