Start of the Great 2005 Road Trip to a family reunion in
Pittsburgh, PA. Most sightings on this trip were made at
high speed on the interstates, while dodging construction
zones, semitrucks, and torrential rain, except for all
too few stops for actual birding.

Route
Checked out of the Hampton Inn in Cranberry. Drove to
Cook Forest. 1200, hiked through main camping area, took
Corduroy Trail a short distance past its intersection
with Camp Trail, then Camp Trail counterclockwise back to
the car. The trails were pretty dead, but one small
puddle between the parking lot and the Corduroy trailhead
had a bunch of cooperative birds. 1435, drive to
Bradford.
Observed a small sciurid. Its coloration, from spine to
venter: black stripe down the spine; narrow gray zone; two
black stripes closely spaced with a pale buff zone between
them; flanks grading from gold to white on the venter.

Route
Arrived at Muscatatuck NWR about 1715. A quick walk
around the loop right by the interpretive center,
followed by driving all the major roads and stopping by a
few ponds. 1925, leave the refuge. Gorgeous little
spot, nicely maintained, and relatively deserted (both
by people and by birds), which what the heck did I expect
on a summer weekday late afternoon?
Film
Start the day (and the entire trip---this was the first
day I actually shot any pictures in the bird rig!) on
frame 27. Frames 27, 28, at Muscatatuck, two American
Crow butt-shots, insurance in case I never got any more
opportunities. Fr. 29, Great Blue Heron at Lake Sheryl.
[,32], Great Blue Heron.

Route
1150, leave Socorro. NM-1 to Jerry Oldenettel's place
in Luis Lopez, then to the Bosque refuge. Worked the
pond visible from NM-1 three times in hopes of seeing
the reported White Ibis. Worked the Marsh Loop and the
seasonal road. Left around 1700.
Film
Started with an existing roll of VC-400 at frame 33.
First exposures microdots of Solitary Sandpiper, then
butterflies. Film change at 1330 to KR-64; that roll
with more butterflies, Bank Swallow, Barn Swallow,
Pied-billed Grebe, Sora, Western Wood-Pewee, Blue
Grosbeak, White-faced Ibis. At 1550 that roll finished.
Camera rewind crank came apart at that point, so no new
roll installed.
