I miscalled these birds as Solitary Sandpipers, despite the fact that they weren't solitary: there were seven in a fairly tight group. I based my miscall on the dark back with small light spots and what appeared to be an eyering, and that the legs appeared to be pale gray, but that was misleading because I was working into a backlight. However, on comparing these photos with real Solitaries, it's clear that the eyering is not distinct enough. The yellowish leg color is more apparent in the photo of a bird in flight.

First of the year, and saw lots more on the refuge and also in Socorro.

The first photo is a good photo quiz. I was convinced that it was a Cassin's, based on the dark gray head, the pale tips on the rectrices, and an apparent lack of white on the outer rectrices. But you can see tiny slivers of white at the edges of the tail near its base, even in this photo. The second photo was taken of the same bird 30 seconds later, and clearly shows that it's a Western: the head doesn't look so dark here; there is no sharp discontinuity in color at the top of the breast; and the white outer rectrices show clearly.

Vocalizations: A loud '{ter-jee}^3'. Sang this a few times.

Did not see the bird, but it has been reported at or near this location several times recently. After it stopped singing I reviewed the calls on my iPad Sibley and it was a fairly good match. Not a state bird, as I saw the one at Socorro's Riverine Park on 1998-03-05.

1215-1315, Brininstool Road and my first actual visit to the real Bell Lake after about thirty years of thinking that Allred Tank was Bell Lake. Bell Lake was bone-dry; looks like the water table can't be anywhere within 30 feet of the surface here.

1400, brief visit to Allred Tank. It has water but looks pretty scorched-earth otherwise.

1600-1640, Harry McAdams and Ocotillo parks north of Hobbs.

Within a few yards of the ranger's residence at Rattlesnake springs, observed a fine healthy adult Porcupine. According to the Bosque refuge staff, this species was hard-hit by some kind of plague about ten years back and is just now starting to recover.

After looking for Blue Jays in the city park proper with no success, I was headed back to my car on the north side when I saw this beauty slide into some large evergreens in the back yard of a house across Clinton Street. I was lucky to get these two shots, and then I was even luckier when the advent of the hawk in those trees set off the Blue Jays that were in there.
