Route
0635, leave Carlsbad.
0700-1040, Rattlesnake Springs and Washington Ranch.
1215-1315, Brininstool Road and my first actual visit
to the real Bell Lake after about thirty years of
thinking that Allred Tank was Bell Lake. Bell Lake was
bone-dry; looks like the water table can't be anywhere
within 30 feet of the surface here.
1400, brief visit to Allred Tank. It has water but
looks pretty scorched-earth otherwise.
1600-1640, Harry McAdams and Ocotillo parks north of
Hobbs.
Within a few yards of the ranger's residence at
Rattlesnake springs, observed a fine healthy adult
Porcupine. According to the Bosque refuge staff, this
species was hard-hit by some kind of plague about ten
years back and is just now starting to recover.
