Route
Effort: by car, 3.28 hours and 23.50 miles; by foot,
4.63 hours and 1.30 miles; total, 7.92 hours and 24.80
miles.
Started at Turtle Bay just before dawn, worked it
fairly thoroughly, then drove briefly out into the
scrublands west of town. Thence out Lopezville Road,
across I-25, north on Chaparral Road, east to the river
dike, then looked at Riverine Parks #5 through #1,
mainly on foot around #4.
Phoenix-area birder Jack Holloway happened to show up at
Turtle Bay and was most helpful, finding a number of
types that I missed, and finding several good species
that I was able to find after he staked them out for me.
The effort numbers are all mine, but he spent 2:40 there
and probably walked at least a couple of miles. Forms
that I missed but he saw are marked “fide”;
when we both saw a given species, the count for that form
is the maximum of our individual counts.
