Description: The white underfeathering at the neck made me wonder if this was a Chihuahuan Raven, but it was with a group of birds cawing, and its tail feathers were even in length.

The very southwest corner of the trail, at its closest point to where NM-1 passes under the BNSF railway at Elmendorf Switch.

I have seen this species several times at this corner, but this is the first time I can recall seeing this species at the top of a tree.

Thrasher, Curve-billed 1 @San Antonio to Bosque del Apache

Ten feet from the intersection of San Antonito and El Alto, in a tall mesquite where I've seen Crissals before.

Of course, because I'd seen Crissals here before, when I saw the dark moustachial stripe and plain throat, I immediately miscalled it as a Crissal. But the photos clearly show the mottled breast pattern, the not terribly long bill, and the complete lack of brick-red vent feathering. Bitten again by calling it on the first observed field mark!

0805-1200, volunteer duty at the Boardwalk during Festival of the Cranes. Temps around 34F, wind chill from the north more like 15F. The first three hours I mostly stayed at the gap in the line of willows right at the east end of the boardwalk. More than about ten minutes out at the first set of benches led to serious hand cramps. I'm not ashamed to say I spent the last hour mostly in the car with the heater on. Attendance was about 10 individuals and two smallish busloads of about 15 each. Compare that to some former years when I've seen 300 people during a deck shift.

Flew south over the flood unit across the road from the Boardwalk.

Description: Medium dark gray. At the time I thought it was about the right shade to be an immature Herring Gull, but it was too far to see any other details. Later one of the ace young birders of the Intensive Tour said that he'd gotten a very good look at an immature Herring Gull the previous day.

Last winter I saw a bird of this species at the exact same spot. From the Unit 8 parking lot at the midpoint of the Intermittent Road, take the trail north, right at the first fork and right again at the second fork. Not too much further there is a cleared space to your right occupied by a large pile of dead wood, maybe five feet high. The bird was a few yards behind the woodpile moving around some fairly tall trees.
