@day: Rattlesnake Springs to Carlsbad
@road1: Washington Ranch to US 62-180
Route
0930, Rattlesnake Springs, just above the ford.
0945, afoot, walking west from the gate.
1230, rolling.
There was a group of about 15 working their west through
Rattlesnake when I overtook them. I didn't know who they are
but they all carried quality optics, and they seemed awfully
serious, not like a tour group.
So of course I couldn't help goofing on them. I walked into
the middle of the group, who had just left the riparian
habitat at the far end of the picnic area. “Did you
see the Piratic Flycatcher,” I asked one gent. He just
stared. “How could you miss it?” I
continued. “It was right between the Common Crane and
the Rufous-necked Wood-Rail!” Stony silence from all.
A grim, humorless, excessively professional group. My theory
is that the three I mentioned are “birder's
birds,” and Real Ornithologists disdain those as
outliers. Clearly I was some sort of frivolous person and
could be ignored.
I later found out they were all honchos of the Texas
Ornithological Society on their way to a TOS meeting in El
Paso. Much is now explained. They're right, of course. As
John Hubbard always emphasized, outliers are fun, and may be
evidence of range expansion, but real population biologists
don't care about the edges of the distribution as much as they
are about the condition of the core gene pool at the center.

(partial)
1120, afoot at Hobbs City Park. Managed to trip
over my own feet and lacerate my left kneecap. A sad day
for birding: exactly one bird, a Great-tailed
Grackle.
I visited the former site of Maddox Lake, which was the
cooling pond for a gas-fired generating station. Sadly,
the station is shut down and there is no lake anymore.
I also visited Ocotillo Park north of Hobbs. They have
recently expanded the golf course, and it looks like the
perimeter road, that has been productive for me in the past,
is now blocked off to vehicle traffic. Another good spot
gone bad.
