1150, looked at what later turned out to be the
Chupadera Mountain RV Park and Gallery, on NM-1 a bit
north of the refuge. A few waterbirds and a few duck and
teal decoys that might fool a bird at 10,000' AGL.
1205, Bosque refuge proper.
1305, walked the Marsh View Trail
counterclockwise.
1425, rolling.
Primarily testing the Fuji Finepix S1. Verdict: a decent
emergency camera but not for serious photography. Slow
to focus, slow to shoot, and down at the pixel level
gives a somewhat impressionistic rendering. The shots of
Blue Goose, Northern Pintail, and American Kestrel show
that it performs decently if you can fill the frame, but
these were all subjects that permitted close approach.
In particular, the kestrel is the nearly tame one who
hangs out on the sign near the entrance booth: note the
band. All shots with the S1 except the second Bald
Eagle, which was with my standard 900/5.6 rig.

Saw a few torpid Pogonomyrmex ants out today,
first since last fall. This is quite early, possibly the
earliest I've seen them, but it came after a number of days
over 70°F.

All photos except the first two of Common Goldeneye
are with the Fuji S1. When you can fill up most of its
18Mpx, it can do nice work, as with the American Kestrel
and the Sandhill Crane. It is not a camera for extreme
distance, as the Bald Eagle shot shows: these are the
pixels at 1:1, and they show what I call the
“impressionistic” texture. The other major
drawbacks of the S1 are in the handling. Focusing and
shooting are very slow. Furthermore, with small subjects,
the autofocus may not work at all, and the manual focus,
using a tiny thumb-buster knob about the size of a shirt
button, is not an option.
