I tried and tried to make this into a Western Sandpiper but the bill was too heavy, and I didn't key in on the slight thickening at the distal end. I sent this one to my old friend Dave Shuford at Point Blue, who has handled about as many shorebirds as grains of sand on Limantour Spit, and he replied:

“The shorebird in question looks like a Sanderling that has partly molted into breeding plumage. No size or shape comparison with other birds, but the stout body, (black) legs, and bill all rule out WESA or LESA. So that's my vote.”

Came in to drink at the north end of the tiny feeder pool on the west side of the main pond.

Did not call it correctly in the field: went through Chipping and then Brewer's. While cataloging, first guess was Song, then the second image showed the characteristic buffy breastband.

Guessing Cordilleran based on the large almond-shaped eyepatch; bill too long for Least; dark band across the upper breast. The photos make the bird look grayer than I recall, but the first photo shows yellowish tones to the underparts.

Same spot as last month.

Vocalizations: The song on the Sibley mobile app has a consistent pattern: two high chips, followed by a series of gurgles or chatters at a lower pitch. All the songs I heard out of the 2016-04-24 bird fit this pattern, except that I heard only one initial high chip. Today I heard two repetitions of the song.

I did not get a good look at the singer, but just after it quit singing, I saw a bird that had the same general color and shape depart from the same locale from which the 2016-04-24 bird left, and fly in the same direction (north). So not rock-solid, but this record was two weeks later than any other record I'm aware of.

I wouldn't normally expect a coot to dine on a crustacean, but this was an exceptional situation. What was a large body of water north and east of the Dabbler Deck had by this point shrunk down to a remnant a few dozen yards long, which probably concentrated all the crustaceans and other prey items that had been in the larger body, making this a busy spot today.

There's a story here (there's always a story). I used to be able to drive to what we called “Second Cabin” back in the late 1980s when they actually bladed the road every year or two. No more! The wet fall of 2014 washed it out horribly in many places.

(Just for the record, First Cabin was a short distance up the road from the El Tigre Fork (340150n 1070913w), but nowadays I can't even find the debris pile where it used to be.)

Today my friend David “Packrat” Hunter was able to drive me all the way up to the cabin in his high-clearance Jeep. While there, two ladies from Tom Kelly's ranch showed up on an ATV to drop off salt blocks for their cattle. They told me that they called this Eli's Cabin, after a recluse who settled at this spot in the 1920s, initially living in a barrel, and eventually building the cabin where he lived for decades.

Always a bird of special interest to me, dating back to the days when I used to watch them ruining some of the facades on buildings in the main quad of Stanford University. There have been times I couldn't seem to find them in Water Canyon, but they are hanging on, and even seem to be a bit more numerous lately.
