Some people who had been out very early said they had not heard any Carolinas singing at the usual spots. I had one sing well along the second leg of the North Seasonal Road, but that was probably getting close to 10am. Later, another one burst into song in the trees along the soad of the Bosque (center) Road about 150 yards west of the Eagle Scout Deck; this was probably the bird Cathie Sandell had near here, but across the road, yesterday. Heard only, in both cases, as usual. Sigh.

Wren, Sedge 1 @Bosque del Apache NWR GPS: 334821.5n 1065243.9w

Seen on the west side of the North Seasonal Road about 100 yards south of what birders call the “Pump House” and refuge staff call the “warm water well;” this feature is disguised by a palisade of canes. Gary Froehlich showed me where to stand: 34°48'21.5"N, 106°52'43.9"W, and look toward Chupadera Peak.

Vocalizations: The first component to be detected is a sharp 'chip' note separated by a few seconds. As the bird moves closer, you can hear that each chip is followed by a rapid sequence of gurgles or buzzes at a lower frequency, not getting faster during the sequence. This is different than the Sibley recording, in which each component starts with two chips, and the lower sequence tends to speed up.

A stakeout, discovered by Celestyn Brozek on 2016-04-22, which I missed by half an hour yesterday. The bird had a regular circuit that took it elsewhere for a few minutes, then it would cycle through some dried vegetation about 15 yards from the road, singing frequently. Thanks to Jerry Oldenettel, whose strong rarity-attracting field canceled out my personal rarity-repelling field and produced the bird at about 0730 just after he arrived. Thanks to Cheryl who was showing her friends Nancy and Mike the refuge and pointed the bird out for me when I got these photos.
