CSE Department Meeting 1-24-22
PARs
- Due when, January 31?
- NEW FORMS
Assessment
- All Department Assessments for Fall20/Spring21 year are turned in.
- Several months ahead of last year, but late on some programs
- Now do Fall 21 assessments if you haven't already done so. I will
put up what I've got and what's needed. Note that there are various
exemptions (electives, 481 assessment bundled with 482, etc.).
State of the CSE Department
- enrollment is robust
- official numbers come later, but CS and EMGT are healthy. MGT and IT
remain precariously low. I look forward to seeing what numbers the
MGT BA does.
- two faculty searches (Randolph CS Education, Management)
- expect to see some faculty candidates visit*
- admin search
- no applicants so far. Leslie has been helping. I would appreciate if
requests for Leslie's time go through me and we keep them low
- name limbo
- we are the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, but don't
expect that name to live forever
- we are short a TA
- one TA is teaching CSE 107 this year. Depending on how the Randolph
search goes we might also be short next year.
- We have a Visiting Scholar in Management.
- how can the department and/or NMT better support your teaching efforts?
- If you need more hourly help, e.g. with grading, let me know. What else?
- how can the department and/or NMT better support your research efforts?
- Free department chair proofreading. What else? We should want to increase
quality as much as quantity, perhaps more so.
- Cramer 221 remodel status
- Got a bid, not real happy with it. Shopping for chairs.
- webadmin team
- Kaisa Drew and Alex DeVault will help with web and related efforts
- Things that go bump in the night
-
- FreeIPA meltdown
- It appears that aspects of our compute infrastructure are broken and it
may affect some courses. Sysadmins haven't been able to
create new accounts for some students.
- Sysadmin turnover
- Jeffery might lose sleep over upcoming sysadmin graduation.
- Advising
- Some faculty do not always answer students' e-mails very well.
I am fine with doing my share plus being the back-up advisor,
but in some cases you may also need to make some adjustments.
- Envisioning better usage of Cramer 227
- The TA bullpen converted classroom is underutilized. Maybe partly due to
covid, but partly because it has to be made habitable.
- Envisioning better usage of Cramer 228
- Right now it is being used as storage, and if I go to VPAA to ask for
space, they will just say "Cramer 228 isn't being used"
CS PhD Requirements
Jun's draft, for discussion.
