Agenda for CSE Department Meeting 8-21-24
- Welcome Back!
- Welcome to Socorro, Drs. Chen, Kolen and Li!
- Monday 8/26: our first CS Research Seminar
-
Dr. Sriram Krishnamurthy of Brown University will talk on
"Building Programming Media for Novices".
- CS Research Talks
- Who wants to give a talk to the CSE 585 CS Grad Seminar?
- Can you nominate 1 or more colleagues to give talks this fall?
- Seminars are M 5:30-6:45, W 3-4, or F 3-4.
- The Monday timeslot matches UIdaho's grad seminar for joint talks.
- I'm inviting folks from many neighboring schools and labs
- Who wants to be a CAHSI LREU faculty mentor?
- And can you find one or more students for the
CAHSI Local REU Program?
- Who wants to participate in a NM Forestry Landownership Database project?
- The state wants to help the land-rich, cash-poor in the state...mainly
so that the state itself can generate more revenue. Possible collaboration
with Navajo Tech. Seems like more of a development project than a research
project. Maybe some money will be involved; maybe some student support.
If you want to participate, let me know.
- Assessment
-
- We need all assessments for last academic year by September 1 in order
to convene committees to discuss assessments during September.
- What courses? All courses required for degrees.
- What have I received already? Time to do a better job of tracking it.
I will create a google drive.
-
This year, our IT, MGMT programs will be espsecially assessed by internal
NMT admin. If you teach IT or MGMT classes, expect I'll need more help
than usual
- Buzzcamp vs. Summer STEM
- Buzzcamp had ~50 this year. It is Dr. Liebrock's and instructor Knowles'
baby, but if it is to grow, it will probably morph into a partnership
with Summer STEM, which is being run by Admissions. There will likely
be a need for instructional faculty and/or students to run this.
- SJC Visit
- Contingent of faculty requested to go to Farmington in October.
- Technical Electives Form
- Do we all know where the form is? Do we all advise students to fill it
out prior to taking their technical electives? Or is it just another
mostly-rhetorical part of the intent to graduate process?
- Recommendation is
that you ask students to start filling it out before they start taking
technical electives, since they must be approved.
- State CS Common Numbering System
- I spent two wonderful days last week meeting with colleagues from
around the state. Work was driven largely by 2 year schools with vocational
technical mindset, but we ended up with 5 courses that should transfer for
CS majors. Prepare for the worst, but hope for the best.
- What, no Retreat?
- Maybe. What do we really want, professionally, in this department?
