...the NSF CISE MSI Aspiring PI Workshops... 2024-2025 series will consist of two phases: the first in-person workshop will be held in Denton, TX, from December 12 to 13, 2024, and the second virtual workshop will take place in early or mid-January 2025.The primary goal of this workshop is to train aspiring PIs in NSF proposal writing, research team building, and collaboration development, preparing them to submit proposals to NSF CISE Research Expansion Program (CISE MSI, NSF24-536 Solicitation) in 2025 and 2026.
We would like to extend an invitation to your faculty members whose research aligns with CISE MSI vision, particularly in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science (DS), and Extended Reality (XR). We will provide funds to cover travel costs for attendees.
More information about the workshop is available at the following link: https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=2437481, and https://sharadonly.github.io/cise/index.html
Please note that the workshop application deadline is September 30, 2024. We would appreciate it if you could share this information with your colleagues and encourage them to submit their applications before the deadline.
Feel free to reach out to us at msi-workshop@cis.fiu.edu if you have any questions.
I had previously reported to you the work of the committee; now let's see what they did with it. I think the only one we have to look at is the CSCI prefix. We are pretty much compelled to change our catalog to use a subset of the CSCI courses in place of our current required undergraduate CSE/IT lower-division sequence. Discuss.TO: Higher Education Provosts/Chief Academic Officers FROM: Kathleen F. Sena NMHED Operations Research Analyst CC: Stephanie M. Rodriguez, Cabinet Secretary, New Mexico Higher Education Department Dr. Patricia Trujillo, Deputy Secretary, New Mexico Higher Education Department Mark Chisholm, Director, Academic Affairs and Policy New Mexico Higher Education Department RE: Computer Science Common Course Numbering ______________________________________________________________________________The New Mexico Higher Education Department began working in 2023 with faculty from your colleges and universities to review courses offered in Computer Science (CSCI) and Computer Information Systems Technology (CIST); Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML); and Business Computer Information Systems (BCIS) to common number them with a common course title; course description and student learning outcomes. This certainly was not an easy task, given the diversity of the computer science-type courses offered throughout the state. The committees have completed their work and attached are the word documents with the final common course numbers and associated information. Work to adopt the common courses identified is now in the hands of the academic curriculum processes at your institutions.
NMHED is cognizant that the curricular processes at each institution are unique and on an internal timeline. We understand that for most institutions it will not be possible to complete this work for the 2024-2025 catalog. We will however expect the institutions to have completed their internal curricular processes and submitted their NMHED Common Course Number applications in time for the publishing of the 2025-2026 catalogs.
There will be courses offered at your institution that have not been common numbered as they are only offered at your school. Where there is institutional variation with subject prefixes, the new subject prefixes listed below will need to be adopted.
- CSCI-Computer Science,
- CIST-Computer Information Systems Technology,
- AIML-Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- BCIS-Business Computer Information System
The computer science working committees acknowledge there are some courses unique to institutions based on their degree programs, communities they serve, and accreditation requirements that may be part of the curriculum. In most cases, unique courses have already been assigned a 4 digit course number. Please contact Kathleen Sena, Operations Analyst at Kathleen.sena@hed.nm.gov for the assignment of the unique number before processing through your institution's curricular process. This should occur before submitting to your institution's curricular process.
A faculty committee who worked on the common numbering will review the unique number requests and make a recommendation to the NMHED CCNS working committee for their consideration. It is the expectation of the NMHED Academic Policy Division that all institutions make changes to their current course numbering or completely change all their courses they offer to the new subject prefixes as unique courses.
Action Checklist:
All institutions withprograms will adopt the new subject prefixes.
- CSCI-Computer Science,
- CIST-Computer Information Systems Technology,
- AIML-Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- BCIS-Business Computer Information System
All institutions must submit and receive approval for course number changes by NMEHD CCNS Committee
All updated course catalogs will be published by 2025-2026.
As your institution moves through the process of having your courses approved and submitted to our organization, and you have questions, please contact Kathleen F. Sena, Operations Analyst, at Kathleen.sena@hed.nm.gov or (505) 309-2648. Thank you for your time and attention with this message and the work involved.
